Why I Chose My Legal Area: I like problem-solving and love the competitive nature of litigation and trial work. It is very exhilarating to roll the dice and take a bold step to resolve a case by trial or other unique resolutions.
Most Memorable Case: K2 Retail Construction Services, Inc. v. West Lansing Retail Development, LLC et al. This decision was the first of its kind and answered many unknown questions about the Construction Lien Act (CLA), including what occurs if an owner does not redeem following a foreclosure, a lien claimant's right to credit bid a lien at foreclosure, and what the court must do to determine surplus where a credit bid occurs. It also highlighted the CLA's flexibility and the circuit court's broad equitable authority to craft an appropriate remedy based upon all the circumstances.
Prediction for 2025: Depending on how tariffs affect downstream industries, I expect to see a rise in payment delays and litigation associated with such delays.
