Civil Defense Litigation Attorney
Foster Swift Collins & Smith, PC has a growing insurance defense, premises liability, transportation, and general commercial litigation practice and is looking to hire a full-time civil defense litigation attorney for the Southfield office.

Position responsibilities include:
- Manage files through all stages of litigation.
- Draft pleadings, motions, and responses and legal correspondence.
- Handle all aspects of discovery including taking depositions as well as drafting and responding to interrogatories and requests to produce.
- Represent clients in court proceedings, including motion hearings, mediations, settlement conference, trials, and evidentiary hearings.
- Work closely with clients including writing regular status reports and communicating complex information (written and oral) to stakeholders in an accessible way.
- Collaborate with other attorneys, paralegals and support staff.
Required qualifications include:
- 4+ years litigation experience including drafting pleadings, motion practice, depositions, and case management.
- JD from an accredited law school.
- Admitted to State Bar of Michigan and be in good standing.
- Excellent persuasive writing, legal research, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong professional judgment, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Strong work ethic with record of being proactive and resourceful.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a busy case load, work under pressure, meet deadlines and pay attention to detail.

Human resources generalist
We are seeking a Human Resources Generalist for the Lansing office. This position collaborates with the Director of Human Resources and the Senior HR Generalist to administer human resources policies and programs, balancing employee advocacy and business operating needs. The position provides comprehensive HR support, directly or indirectly, in the areas of benefits administration and pro-active issue/problem identification and resolution.
Essential Job Functions
- Maintain effective and legally compliant recordkeeping systems for HR files and records
- Maintain HR databases, including the firm’s HRIS; partner with payroll and vendors to set up feeds or import/export data
- Assist employees in understanding benefit programs and HR policies and procedures
- Reconcile vendor invoices to enrollment/employee elections and correct errors by communicating and following up with vendors and payroll
- Prepare and submit documents legally required for health and welfare benefits compliance
- Ensure required employment law posters and benefits notices are up-to-date and posted at all sites as well as online
- Participate in and continuously improve new hire orientation programs
- Manage the offboarding of employees, including necessary communications, develop KPIs as requested
- Perform audit and compliance functions as requested
- Recommend, develop and organize employee recognition events, initiatives to improve employee engagement and employee well-being
- Participate in the formulation of objectives for the HR department in support of the business needs of the firm
- Perform other job duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; degree in Human Resource Management, Business or related field a plus
- Must have at least two years of HR Generalist experience; experience with HRIS system and/or payroll a plus
- Certifications in HR, Benefits, or Compensation a plus
- Law office experience a plus
- Must be reliable, trustworthy, and able to maintain confidentiality
- Must demonstrate effective organizational and time management skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
- Must be detail-oriented and able to use spreadsheets to manage data as needed
- Must demonstrate proficiency in various databases and HR/Benefits administration systems
- Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear manner
- Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of employees
- Must demonstrate sound judgment
- Must demonstrate understanding of federal and state employment laws
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
