Profile

David McKinney is an associate in the Tax Planning & Business Transactions Section in the Houston office. His practice focuses on federal tax planning, with experience across corporate, partnership, and international tax matters.

Mr. McKinney earned his LL.M. in Taxation from the University of Florida Levin College of Law where he built a strong foundation in Subchapter C, Subchapter K, and inbound and outbound U.S. international tax regimes. He received his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center where he served as Senior Articles Editor for the Houston Business and Tax Law Journal and earned Dean’s List recognition. Mr. McKinney also competed on the law school’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Team and received the Magnolia Cup Professionalism Award.

During law school, Mr. McKinney clerked for both trial courts and law firms, including a national tax boutique and a full-service M&A firm. In these roles, he drafted litigation documents, edited scholarly publications on complex tax legislation, and supported counsel in trial preparation.

Mr. McKinney is admitted to practice in Texas and has contributed to legal scholarship, including a published comment in the Houston Business & Tax Law Journal addressing supply chain vulnerabilities under the CHIPS Act.
