In an article published in The Legal Intelligencer on February 5, 2021, Chamberlain Hrdlicka Philadelphia-based Shareholder Phil Karter and Shareholder and S.A.L.T. Practice Chair Emeritus Stewart Weintraub discuss what questions attorneys should consider if they entertain the idea of changing firms or are solicited to do so.

“Should you decide to take the plunge and explore alternatives, you will undoubtedly want to do a good deal of due diligence about any potential new employers,” explain Karter and Weintraub. “A recruiter’s job is to sell a firm to attractive lateral candidates so you can safely assume that you will receive sterling reviews about the firm’s reputation, financial health, opportunity for advancement and quality of life.”

Karter and Weintraub further explain that while with a recruiter may be a place to start, it is not necessarily a barometer for ensuring that the firm is a good fit. “That’s where the personal interview comes in,” Karter and Weintraub write.

The authors mention that once you decide to interview, there are a number of questions you may want to ask to make the best use of that opportunity. It Is important to get a sense of the personality of the firm and whether its culture is compatible with your workstyle. Karter and Weintraub provide a list of questions candidates should consider on a range of topics that may be important in the decision-making process.
