Article by Jennifer Karpchuk on “How Can I Balance COVID-Related Family Pressures With My Work?”
In an article published on October 8, 2020 in The Legal Intelligencer, Chammberlain Hrdlicka shareholder Jennifer Karpchuk answers a question about balancing COVID-related family pressures with her work.
“As the mother of three young children myself, I can tell you that the best, first step is to remind yourself that this is all temporary and the current crisis will not ruin your career,” explains Karpchuk. “As you well know, even without the stress of the pandemic and virtual classrooms, women have long-been balancing law careers with the demands of raising a family—and COVID-19’s impact has only made it more apparent that they are bearing the brunt of the responsibility in this virtual world.”
She further explains that professionals aren’t alone, and the pandemic has shed light on the weighty responsibility that all of us – including women – carry when it comes to being great lawyers and parents.
“Law firm leaders are talking about the issue, and in my own experience, there’s a lot of grace right now for any parent finding herself—or himself—in the throes of virtual schooling,” said Karpchuk. “My colleagues and clients alike are dealing with this new ‘normal’ and many are finding it is resulting in an opportunity to better connect with each other on a personal level. In fact, I have found that nothing brings people together quite like shared commiseration over virtual learning.”
