Atlanta (May 21, 2025) – John W. Hackney, shareholder in Chamberlain Hrdlicka’s Atlanta office, was recently elected a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel (ACTC). In this role, Hackney will work with other ACTC Fellows to foster excellence and elevate professional standards in the practice of tax law, stimulate skills development and knowledge through participation in continuing legal education programs and seminars, provide mechanisms for input by tax professionals into the development of tax laws, and facilitate scholarly discussion and examination of tax policy and tax administration issues.
ACTC is a nonprofit association of tax attorneys in private practice, law, business, graduate school teaching positions, and government, who are recognized for their excellence in tax practice and their substantial contributions and commitment to the legal profession. Fellows must be nominated by a current Fellow and satisfy the established criteria, pass a rigorous screening process, and be approved by a vote of the Board of Regents.
Hackney is a tax controversy attorney and shareholder at Chamberlain Hrdlicka’s Atlanta tax practice. He represents individuals, corporations, partnerships, family offices, and other entities before all levels of the IRS review process, including during examinations, audits, the Office of Appeals, the Office of Chief Counsel, and at the U.S. Tax Court, as well as state taxing authorities. He has extensive experience in a broad variety of tax matters, often involving sophisticated and complex legal issues, including significant family office matters, tax penalty abatements, Section 469 passive activity losses, estate and gift tax valuation issues, captive insurance, syndicated conservation easements, Employee Retention Credits (ERC), research and development credits, accounting method issues, Section 1031 like-kind exchanges, and Section 183 hobby losses. Deeply involved in the legal community, Hackney is an active member of the Georgia Bar Association: Tax Section and serves as a Trustee for the non-profit Southern Federal Tax Institute (SFTI).
