Partners Brendan Aloysius Barry and Edwin J. Stacker from Shutts & Bowen’s Fort Lauderdale office marked a significant achievement for client YMCA of South Florida as Fort Lauderdale’s City Commission approved a lease of a portion of Holiday Park to the Y. At its June 17th public hearing, the City Commission approved the ground lease for a brand new 48,000 square foot modern YMCA facility, including a wellness center and swimming pool, and a 12,000 square foot free-standing emergency room to be operated by Broward Health.
This marks an important step in the YMCA’s plans to develop this new 60,000 square foot project in Holiday Park which fronts Federal Highway in downtown Ft Lauderdale. The Shutts team assisted with real estate, leasing, title insurance, governmental relations and grants, negotiations with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and other related matters for the 50-year lease for the proposed new development which is to include an array of community programming for children and adults. The Ground Breaking ceremonies for the new facility are scheduled for this Fall with the Ribbon Cutting planned for mid-2027.
The first board meeting of the YMCA of Miami was held in our law firm’s office in 1916 and our firm’s founder, Frank Shutts, served on the YMCA’s first fundraising committee and was the organization’s treasurer for many years. “Shutts has partnered with the YMCA of South Florida for over 100 years and we are proud to have assisted them with this latest project.
