Nicholas Meros Argues Before the U.S. Court of Appeals on Behalf of Florida’s Secretary of State

On May 8, 2025, Shutts & Bowen LLP Tallahassee partner Nicholas Meros argued a case regarding voter registration applications before the United State Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit on behalf of Florida’s Secretary of State.

The case, Vote.Org, et al. v. Secretary of State of Florida, is a challenge under the Materiality Provision of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) to a Florida law requiring certain applicants to sign their voter registration applications by hand. Plaintiffs appealed the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida’s order dismissing their amended complaint for failure to state a cause of action. A recording of the argument is available here.

Shutts & Bowen also currently represents Florida’s Secretary of State in a similar challenge to another provision of Florida’s Election Code under the NVRA and the Voting Rights Act.
