Cameron Parks Authors Copyright Law Article for The Communicator

Shutts & Bowen LLP Orlando partner Cameron Parks recently authored an article for the American Association of Dental Editors & Journalists newsletter, titled “Copyright Law and the Importance of Protecting Your Publication.”

The article, which appeared in the latest issue of The Communicator, highlights the importance of copyright in journalism and publishing, stating that it "protects original works of authorship" fixed in a tangible medium of expression like articles and photographs. According to Cameron, copyright is automatically established when a work is created, but registration with the U.S. Copyright Office offers benefits such as stronger protection, as well as the ability to sue for copyright infringement and potentially obtain statutory damages. Cameron goes on to explain that the Fair Use Doctrine can come into play in certain circumstances allowing for limited use of copyrighted material without permission which is determined upon a variety of factors and evaluated on a case-by-case basis. She also explains that journalists should understand these concepts to protect their work and enforce ownership rights.
